6 Things We Can Learn About Integrity from Daniel
1. God Values Integrity Over Image
When the king was looking for young Israelites to serve him in Daniel 1:3-4, he listed qualities that prized image (“young men without any physical defect, handsome…”) over character.
Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring into the king’s service some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility— 4 young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians.
But God is different, said Ps Benny. “God values integrity above image. Image is what my friends think I am, but integrity is who my wife knows I am.”
2. Integrity Has Power To Influence
When Daniel refused to bow to anyone but God though his life was at stake, he impressed the king.
“His integrity and unwavering trust in God turned the king’s heart towards Yahweh,” said Ps Benny.
The king ended up issuing an edict for all to worship Daniel’s God. Through the testimony of one man of integrity, the entire nation was impacted.
3. Integrity Is An “Inside” Job
After learning of the decree to worship the king, Daniel went home and prayed to God “as he had done before” (Daniel 6:10)
Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.
“This is not a show of defiance. It was an act of integrity because he has been doing this all his life,” said Ps Benny.
“Integrity is simply an inside job, to have an inner compass that is calibrated to God.
4. Integrity Takes Courage.
Daniel knew that devotion to God would lead him into the lion’s den, yet he refused to back down. “You really must be prepared to pay the price for integrity,” said Ps Benny
“God did not call us to be safe. He called us to be brave. So be brave when it comes to standing up for what you believe.”
5. Integrity Brings Blessings
Daniel had a stellar career in the palace, noted Ps Benny. He was favoured by the king and envied by his colleagues.
Because of his spirit of excellence, the king set him over the whole kingdom. He prospered because of his integrity.
6. Integrity Glorifies God
Because of Daniel’s integrity, the whole nation heard about the name of God. God was glorified, concluded Ps Benny.
“This is my challenge to all of us as we capture this forgotten virtue of integrity. May we walk and do our work with integrity.
