The Seven Deadly Sins

Also known as capital sins.

1. Lust

Lust is an intense or overwhelming sexual desire. Lust is very different from love and we can find several passages in the Bible warning us against lustful behaviors and the importance of self-control and holiness.

Scripture | 1 John 2:16 - For everything in the world - the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life - comes not from the Father but from the world.

2. Gluttony

Gluttony is an excessive consumption of food or drink, often to the detriment of one’s health/well-being. It is sin of overindulgence. We should do all things in moderation.

Scripture | Proverbs 23:20-21 - DO not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

3. Greed

Greed is a selfish, insatiable and obsessive desire to have more of something most often material wealth like money, power or possessions for self-gratification and at the expense of others.

Scripture | 1 Timothy 6:6-7 - But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we bought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.

4. Sloth

Slothfulness is laziness both spiritually and physically. It is the state of being indolent, avoiding or neglecting one’s responsibilities and being reluctant to work or make an effort. God values kingdom laborers.

Scripture | Proverbs 21:25 - The desire of the lazy man kills him. For his hands refuse to labor.

5. Wrath

Wrath is a strong, intense and vengeful anger. An outburst that stems from harboring and acting upon destructive emotions which often leads to negative consequences.

Scripture | Psalm 38:8 - Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret-it leads only to evil.

6. Envy

Envy is an issue of the heart. It is resenting, feeling uneasy or seething discontent over the blessings that God has given others. The Bible talks about the importance of contentment.

Scripture | Galatians 5:26 - Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

7. Pride

Pride is basically self-worship. An attitude of self-importance and self-exaltation in relation to God leading to the presumption that you can do anything you want. Pride pulls us away from God and into sin.

Scripture | James 4:6 - But He gives us more grace. That is why scriptures says: "God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble."
